Medical practitioners’ fees are considered allowable expenses for the purposes of the Medical Expense Tax Credit. However, the list of authorized practitioners varies from area to area. If you live in Saskatchewan, it’s important to know which medical practitioners are considered authorized in your province.

Authorized General Health Care Practitioners in Saskatchewan

As a resident of Saskatchewan, you are allowed to include fees from a wide range of medical professionals on your income tax return.

If you see a registered nurse, a licensed or registered practical nurse or a nurse practitioner, you can include those fees when calculating your Medical Expense Tax Credit. However, you cannot include fees from dental nurses or registered nursing assistants.

Additionally, you may include fees from emergency medical technicians, medical lab technologists and medical radiation technologists. Finally, if you incur fees from a midwife, an occupational therapist, a pharmacist, a physician, a physiotherapist, a physical therapist or a surgeon, you may also include those on your return.

Authorized Specialists in Saskatchewan

In Saskatchewan, you can also write off fees from audiologists, podiatrists, dieticians and speech language pathologists.

If you see a specialist and that speciality is not listed on the authorized list of medical practitioners in your province, consider whether or not that professional also falls into another category. For example, pediatricians, obstetricians, cardiologists and many others may advertise their services using their speciality name, but they all fall into the category of physician. This means you can include their fees when computing your Medical Expense Tax Credit.

Authorized Dental and Vision Care Providers in Saskatchewan

For dental care, the list of authorized practitioners in Saskatchewan is relatively comprehensive. It includes dental assistants, hygienists, dental technicians, dental technologists and dental therapists. It also includes denturists, dental mechanics and dentists.

For eye care, you can include fees from opticians and optometrists.

Authorized Mental Health Care Providers in Saskatchewan

If you see mental health care professionals in Saskatchewan, you can include their fees when calculating your Medical Expense Tax Credit but only if those professionals are psychologists, registered psychiatric nurses or social workers.

Unfortunately, you cannot claim fees from marriage and family therapists or sexologists.

Authorized Alternative Health Care Practitioners in Saskatchewan

In Saskatchewan, you may also include fees from chiropractors and naturopaths when completing your income tax return. Unfortunately, you cannot include fees from seeing traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, massage therapists or any other alternative care practitioners.

Adding Medical Practitioners to the Authorized List

Unfortunately, as a private citizen, you can do little to add medical practitioners to the list of authorized practitioners in your province or territory. However, your provincial government representatives can contact the CRA and ask to have medical practitioners added to the list. Members of professional health care organizations can also request additions to the list.
