For many Canadians, tax season can feel overwhelming. But for Laurent Brule, a Manitoba-based tax expert with TurboTax Canada, it's an opportunity to help people move closer to their goals. Laurent brings both technical expertise and a human touch to every return he works on.
Laurent's relationship with taxes started early. “I've been doing taxes for myself since I was 18, so over half my life,” he relays. During the past six years, he's turned that personal experience into a professional career, completing more than 1,000 T1 returns. About half of those involve small businesses and self-employed Canadians, giving him a strong understanding of the specific challenges entrepreneurs face. Because of his extensive experience, he is able to help clients with complex tax issues, such as foreign tax obligations.
Now in his third tax season with TurboTax Canada, Laurent says he's found a natural fit. “I'm absolutely loving it,” he shares. His passion for meaningful work is a driving force in everything he does, and something that keeps his customers coming back to him. Whether he's helping clients understand a deduction or guiding them through a complex situation, his goal is always the same: to empower people to make their financial lives better.
Understanding the “why”
What makes Laurent stand out is how he reframes taxes. “People always say, ‘I hate numbers, and I could never do what you do,'” he explains. “I actually don't love numbers either. What I love is what they represent.” To Laurent, every line on a return tells a story. A deduction isn't just a figure. Every dollar could mean more breathing room for a small business owner or a reinvestment in a dream.
That perspective carries into how he connects with clients. Laurent believes that understanding the “why” behind someone's finances is key to helping them feel confident and in control. “I genuinely care about everyone I talk to,” he says. “And I've probably made at least 75% of my clients laugh along the way.” His approachable style helps take the stress out of tax season and makes the experience feel a little more human.
Outside of work, Laurent's life reflects the same curiosity and purpose-driven mindset. A self-described “wanderer” and digital nomad at heart, he once travelled across Canada with his husband and their three dogs, embracing the freedom of life on the road. It's one of the reasons he loves the convenience of TurboTax for both himself and his customers. He helps his Canadian customers file their taxes from wherever they are, and he can also work while wandering the world. When he's not exploring, he's often tackling new challenges, everything from sourdough starters to full home renovations.
Laurent's top tax tip
Laurent is more than just a tax expert. He's someone who understands that behind every return is a real person, with real goals. And helping Canadians achieve those goals is what he enjoys most.
Laurent offers this encouragement to Canadians: don't be afraid of your taxes—or the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). “You have more power than you think,” he says. “Keep your receipts, understand your deductions, and make sure you're claiming your fair share.”
