Is tracking down your T-slips, triple-checking them for accuracy, and calculating your carry-forward amounts an annual source of stress at tax time? One missed slip or misplaced RRSP contribution receipt can make the difference between a tax refund or a balance due. Let’s make sure you are on the optimal side of that equation.
What if you can ensure that every T-slip added to your CRA My Account at the time of auto-fill (AFR) is seamlessly loaded and imported directly into the proper spot on your personal tax return, in just a few clicks? And that every carry-forward was indeed carried forward?
Auto-fill my return (AFR) makes it happen!
- You can automatically import your tax information from the CRA right into TurboTax with Auto-fill my return.
- Register for your CRA MyAccount to be able to use Auto-fill my return.
- AFR helps you avoid future requests for review, by using the information the government already has on file for you, it is virtually a stress free process from beginning to end.
What is CRA Auto-fill my return?
CRA’s Auto-fill my return automatically fills out part of your tax return by importing your information and slips from your CRA My Account.
The benefits of this feature, supported by all editions of TurboTax software, at no extra cost, are almost magical. With AFR, you can:
Access all your available slips in your CRA account in one place
When an employer, government entity, or financial institution issues you a T-slip for anything (i.e. employment income, investments, pensions, social assistance), a copy is sent to the CRA. The CRA then houses it in your CRA My Account, along with your previously filed tax returns, carry-forward amounts, and other tax-related data. With auto-fill (AFR), you’ll be able to access the slips received and processed by the CRA for the current tax year by mid-March.
This includes:
- T-slips: T3, T4, T4A, T4A(OAS), T4A(P), T4E, T4RIF, T4RSP, T5, T5007, T5008
- Benefit slips like RC210, (CWB Advance Payments Statement)
- RRSP contribution receipts
- Unused amounts for tuition/education/textbook credits and past losses
To use the AFR feature, the only thing you need to do (if you haven’t already) is register for your CRA My Account.
Note that Québec Residents have to file a federal AND a provincial tax return. Revenu Québec has a service called clicSÉQUR which, like the CRA, receives and stores all of your provincial Relevé slips.

Eliminate human error
Since the government entities receive a copy of every tax slip issued, they have the ability and responsibility to compare what you filed on your return with what they see on your account. And if there are differences, they’ll want to know why.
Every typo, or missing slip can have consequences and prompt them to take a closer look. By directly transferring your information from your online account into the proper spots on your return, it minimizes the risk of human error and delivers the peace of mind of knowing your information is accurate, down to the last cent.
Secure your personal information
With millions of Canadians relying on TurboTax to protect their personal information, the security of your data is our first priority, year-after-year. Using the same level of encryption that national banks use for online banking, we stop at nothing to ensure your data, whether imported or manually entered, stays safe and secure.
