Children’s Fitness Tax Credit
What is the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit?
You may have heard about it when the Federal government introduced it some time ago. Parents may be able to claim up to $500 per child for registering them in certain programs of physical activity. It is part of the family tax credits that we can benefit from.
What are the conditions?
Your child, or the child of your spouse or common-law partner must be under 16 or under 18 if that child is eligible for the disability amount. Only certain programs are eligible for the child fitness tax credit. They have to be of a minimum duration, supervised, suitable for children and include physical activity that increases endurance, strength, flexibility or balance.
What if the program involves both artistic and physical activity?
If the activity is eligible under the Children's Fitness Tax Credit, claim the expenses under that credit only. You cannot claim the expenses under both credits.
What do I do if I’m not sure a program is eligible?
You can just ask the people who administer the program. They will know if their program is eligible. The receipt you get will indicate what amount is eligible for the credit.
