Frequently asked questions

As a sole proprietor, you report business income on your personal tax return and don’t need to file separately for your business. We'll ask simple questions about your work and handle all the forms automatically.

Self-employment income is any money you earn from your own business, whether you're consulting, contracting, or running a trade. You pay tax on your profit (income minus expenses), not your total revenue.

We can help you track every dollar in and every deductible expense out, so you only pay tax on what you actually keep.

You have two key dates to remember: pay any taxes owed by April 30 to avoid interest, and file your return by June 15.

If you spent money to earn money, it's likely deductible. We'll help you find common expenses like home office costs (rent, utilities, internet), vehicle expenses (gas, insurance, maintenance), and business essentials like supplies, phone bills, advertising, and even your TurboTax fee.

You don’t need to worry about forms, we’ll handle them for you. We'll ask you easy questions about your income and expenses, then automatically fill out the T2125 (the main form for sole proprietors) behind the scenes.

Filing in Québec? We'll automatically prepare your provincial TP-80-V and sync it with your federal return—so you're compliant with both CRA and Revenu Québec, no extra work.

No, you don't need to file GST/HST (or QST, if you’re in Québec) unless your business revenue hits $30,000 in a year. Below that, you're a "small supplier" and don't need to register or charge GST/HST.

Yes. Working for yourself means you pay both the employee and employer portions of CPP (normally your employer would pay half). But you get a deduction for the employer portion—and we'll calculate everything automatically.

Yes! If you didn’t file with TurboTax last year, you can file with unlimited tax expert help for only $60 (savings of up to $90).

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you can. T2s might seem complex, but you don't need to be an accountant—you just need the right support. We'll guide you through every step, answer any questions you have along the way, and review your return before you file to ensure it's 100% accurate. You stay in control, with the expert backup you need to file confidently.

We're available for corporations in most provinces and territories—including BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, the Atlantic provinces, and the Territories.

Right now, we can't support businesses in Alberta or Québec, multi-province operations, or businesses located outside Canada.

Yes. Even if your corporation was inactive with no revenue, you still need to file a T2. Not filing can result in penalties—even with no tax owing. The good news: filing keeps you compliant and preserves any tax credits or losses for future use.

For inactive corporations that need to file a nil return, you can file with TurboTax Expert Assist Business Nil Return for only $175 per return.

A nil return is a T2 showing $0 income and no tax owing. It tells the CRA your corporation existed but had no activity. If your business was inactive with no revenue, no dividends, and minimal expenses, our Nil Return product ($175) makes staying compliant simple and affordable. Plus, you get the same level of unlimited help included at no extra cost.

Your T2 is due 6 months after your fiscal year-end. For example, a December 31 year-end means a June 30 filing deadline. If that date falls on a weekend or holiday, you're good as long as you file the next business day.

One important note: if you owe taxes, payment is due earlier (within 3 months after year-end), so it's best to get started early. Our experts are available during business hours year-round, so you can get the guidance you need whenever your year-end falls.

If you've missed the deadline, don't worry—just file as soon as you can. The CRA charges 5% of any unpaid tax plus 1% per month the return is late (up to 12 months). These penalties can double for repeat late filers. Even with no tax owing, consistent late filing can trigger extra scrutiny. We'll help you get it done and put it behind you.

If you're a sole proprietor (not a corporation), you'll file your business income with your personal tax return (T1). We suggest using Expert Assist Self-Employed (for sole proprietors and partnerships) instead. It's made to handle your business expenses and personal income together, with expert help along the way.

You can connect with a business tax expert as often as you need, and ask as many questions as you want. Use the “Live help” button to set up a call at a time that’s convenient for you.

Our experts can help with:

  • Corporate tax questions and guidance
  • Checking your work as you go
  • A final review before you file
  • Corporate tax questions after you file

Our experts are available during business hours year-round.

Our TurboTax experts include accountants (CPA—Certified Public Accountant) and tax experts who have an average of 10 years of experience with Canadian taxes.

The key difference is expert support. With Expert Assist Business, you get unlimited help from a business tax expert as you file, plus a final review to ensure 100% accuracy. Desktop Business Incorporated is a downloadable software that gives you control over detailed tax forms.

While Desktop does support Alberta and Québec corporations, it doesn’t include expert guidance or review.

Yes. Business losses can work in your favour—you can apply them to the past three years to get refunds on taxes you've already paid, or save them for up to 20 years. Our experts will help you figure out the best strategy to keep more money in your business.
