Canadian tax rules don’t allow spouses or common-laws to file joint income tax returns. Each Canadian files their own tax return and indicates their marital status and name of their significant other on the return.

A coupled return means that each spouse files an individual return, but the returns are prepared together. If you can split or combine any credits, a coupled return is your best bet.

Your tax return now reflects multiple factors, such as income levels of each spouse and available credits and deductions. When you get married, both your incomes are combined to determine eligibility for certain benefits.

Becoming a parent is a big life change in many ways! For tax purposes, a child is considered a dependant on your return. The CRA offers a non-taxable Canada Child Benefit (CCB) for each eligible family that helps cover the cost of raising children under the age of 18.

Families of children with disabilities will receive an additional amount under the Child Disability Benefit (CDB). The benefit is paid when you register your child after birth and will stop automatically when they turn 18.

Yes, rental income is taxable! Rental income—any income you earn from renting a property—is taxable just like other types of income you earn.

If you own rental property in Canada, you need to fill out form T776 (the Statement of Real Estate Rentals). This form is crucial for accurately reporting rental income and navigating your tax obligations as a landlord.

If the property is not your primary residence (i.e. it’s an investment property), then yes—you have to report your capital gain or loss from the sale of this property.

Capital gains tax is calculated by taking 50% of your capital gain and adding it to your taxable income. When you lose money selling capital property, those losses can help you reduce the tax payable on any capital gains.
