The Canada Revenue Agency’s My Account Online Mail program allows you to receive communications about your tax returns from the CRA by email instead of traditional mail. As of December 2015, the CRA only communicates in this manner concerning notices of assessment and reassessment, but they plan on expanding the service.
In order to ensure your privacy, the CRA does not actually send you the notices by email. Rather, you will receive an alert saying that you have received new online mail. By following the link in the email alert, you will be able to log into the CRA My Account portal and view what has been sent to you. This way, no one who sees your email account can access your tax information.
